The phoenix was written by Sylvia Townsend Warner in 1986 and is a story that shows how men use nature for its own benefit. The story is set during a World War in Europe.
The story is about a very special bird, The Phoenix, which is caught by a Nobleman from England, Lord Strawberry. This person brings it back from Arabia to his house where he has a special part of his aviary reserved for the bird. After he dies the aviary come on the market, and a very ambitious person, Mr. Poldero, buys it and discovers an important secret that the Phoenix hides. He makes the bird suffer a lot only to get money.
The main characters have very different personalities. Although Lord Strawberry doesn't appear so much in the story we know that he is ambitious for birds, he has independent thoughts about the existence of the Phoenix and he dies penniless. In contrast to Mr. Strawberry is Mr. Poldero who is ambitious for money as well as an abuser. Finally it is the Phoenix who is the main character. Through the story he has a peaceful and a passive role until the end where an unknown part of his secret is discovered.
To sum up, the story is exciting and the ending is very surprising. I would recommend it to those people who are against animal abuse.
