Book Review

In L/L Writing, we had to make a book review of the book we read in literature "The Phoenix". First, we had been practising some vocabulary, the structure of the book review and some theory about it. As a task we had to write that type of text between 200 and 240

The phoenix was written by Sylvia Townsend Warner in 1986 and is a story that shows how men use nature for its own benefit. The story is set during a World War in Europe.
The story is about a very special bird, The Phoenix, which is caught by a Nobleman from England, Lord Strawberry. This person brings it back from Arabia to his house where he has a special part of his aviary reserved for the bird. After he dies the aviary come on the market, and a very ambitious person, Mr. Poldero, buys it and discovers an important secret that the Phoenix hides. He makes the bird suffer a lot only to get money.
The main characters have very different personalities. Although Lord Strawberry doesn't appear so much in the story we know that he is ambitious for birds, he has independent thoughts about the existence of the Phoenix and he dies penniless. In contrast to Mr. Strawberry is Mr. Poldero who is ambitious for money as well as an abuser. Finally it is the Phoenix who is the main character. Through the story he has a peaceful and a passive role until the end where an unknown part of his secret is discovered.
To sum up, the story is exciting and the ending is very surprising. I would recommend it to those people who are against animal abuse.

The mysterious old house

In the class of l/l writting we had been working with stories. We read many types, also we worked with vocabulary and tenses. For the final task we had to write a story between 200 and 300 words, that have to finish with the sentence "That was the last time she/he ever saw them"

Family Hudson decided to move to an old house in the countryside in Britain. Robert and Marylin had two beautiful twin daughter: Isabella and Alice. Both were 13 years old.

The house was in bad conditions, it was about 100 years old. The grandfather of the grandfather of Robert Hudson had constructed it for summers. The family arrived at the house in a horrible stormy day. At night, as the they were tired of cleaning and ordering all the day they went to sleep, without even dine. The girls, shared a grey and black room with a big window where you had a huge view of the countryside. Both of the girls asked their parents if they could paint the room, but Marylin said that it had to be another day. Very huffy, Isabelle and Alice went to sleep. It was about 12 o'clock when suddenly a noise downstairs woke the girls up. They looked at each other, they were confused they didn't know what to think. Alice, stood up quickly, turned the light on, and got back to the bed again. They immediately fell asleep again. At 12:05 o'clock an other noise woke the girls up. This time they stood up and ran into their parents room. They told them the situation, and their parents asumed that a box had fallen down in the kitchen. That night, girls were allowed to sleep with them. In the morning the whole family woke up early and when they went to have breakfast their bird in the jail was dead covered of blood. The family didn't pay attention to it so that evening they decided to burry the bird. Isabelle refused and she decided to stay at the house to investigate how the bird died. It was about 8 o'clock and Isabelle noticed that her family didn't come back. As the hours passed by she started to get afraid and started crying. That was the last time she ever saw them.

Diary Entry

In the subject l/l writing, we have to created a diary entry as if we were the grandmother in the poem "For my grandmother knitting". We read this poem on the subject literature.

Dear Diary,

Sometimes my family makes me think I'm useless, they ignore me, even when they come to my house on Sundays. I have three beautiful grandchildren, they are John, Laura and Liz. My son is their father, he treats me as if I were nothing. In some moments we are alone, for example, in the kitchen, he tells me he only comes here because John, Liz and Laura want to see me, but I think that isn't true. My passion is knitting, I have been knitting since I was a fisher-girl, when I got married with Tom, when I had children, to summarise, all my life. I started knitting when I was 11, my grandmother, Ana, taught me. After that, I began to learn to knit different types of things.
Since my son, Mark, had children, I thought it was my task as a grandma to knit to them. They started thanking me the scarves and cardigans I knitted to them, but when they grew up they started telling me "There is no need". At first I didn't care, but then this typical phrase became heavy. Nowdays I don't know what to do, if I continue knitting to them or leave it. Now my hands look old, they are red and also arthritic, but if it is for my grandchildren I would do everything.
